“Nearly 60 people have been executed by drowning in the ISIS-controlled city of Mosul, after the jihadist group suspected them of attempting to organise a rebellion.

“Fifty-eight people were killed in connection with three weapons caches hidden in homes around the city, ‘Reuters’ reported, citing numerous sources from inside the city. They were buried in a mass grave.

“An offensive on the city, still home to more than a million civilians, is anticipated in the coming weeks. ISIS suspected the weapons were intended to be used to spark an internal uprising against them in the event an attack the city.

“They were discovered after one of the rebels was found by ISIS with a message on his phone discussing the weapons. Reportedly, among the rebels were disillusioned former ISIS members, and their leader was previously a close assistant to the elusive leader of the extremist group, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.

“Security has been tightened in Mosul, as ISIS prepare for a major offensive by the Iraqi army and various militias and backed by the US.

“Iraqi security services have reportedly been making contact with people inside the city who have been providing intelligence, leading to air strikes on ISIS targets in the city…

“Mosul, home to up to 1.5 million people, has been at the heart of ISIS’s self-declared caliphate in Iraq since 2014…”

“ISIS is readying for the fight to keep control over Iraq’s second largest city by booby-trapping bridges, extending its network of tunnels and stepping up surveillance as the Iraqi military prepares for an offensive expected to be just a few weeks away.

“Iraqi and US officials said on Wednesday that residents in Mosul also reported that car bombs are being prepared and explosive devices placed in jack-hammered holes in major roads.

“Key areas have been blocked off with concrete walls, and a two-metre-deep moat dug that will be filled with burning oil, in order to make the liberation of Mosul’s estimated 1.5 million residents more difficult, they said. The reports could not be independently verified.

One resident told ‘Reuters’ that children as young as eight, sometimes armed with pistols and knives, have been deployed across the city to monitor and inform on the population. The children recruit other children for the same task.

“It’s a really heartbreaking scene to see Mosul’s kids becoming future terrorists. I taught my seven-year-old son all about autism, to pretend he’s mentally ill to avoid being recruited by [ISIS],” they said in a ‘Whatsapp’ message.

And the other side isn’t much better:

“Militias backed by the Iraqi government are recruiting child soldiers from refugee camps, while mounting a key operation against ISIS.

“Families said young boys were taken from a camp in northern Iraq earlier this month in the latest reported use of children in Iraq, where the illegal practice has also been documented in the so-called ‘Islamic State’ and the Shia militias.

“‘Human Rights Watch’ (HRW) reported that residents of the Debaga camp, near Erbil in the autonomous Kurdistan region, said tribal militias recruited children among hundreds of refugees.

“Witnesses said ‘Hashad al-Ashari’ members drove the boys to a town closer to Mosul, where the ‘Iraqi Security Forces’ (ISF) are preparing to launch an offensive against the largest remaining ISIS stronghold in the country…”
