‘Little Mogadishus’

“Each time news breaks of a stabbing or shooting, she and her neighbours clench: Let it not be Somali. They dread what has become all too common, another name added to the long list of men from the community lost to violence.

So many other men I know . . . just murdered.”

“Hibaq Gelle is a second-generation Canadian whose parents fled war-ravaged Somalia in the 1980s for a better life in Canada. They settled in the Toronto suburb of Etobicoke in an area dubbed ‘Little Mogadishu’, arguably the largest community of Somalis outside the African nation

“Gelle is a rare case of success in a community plagued by violence — not only in Toronto, but right across Canada. Many fled civil war in Somalia only to replace warlords with drug lords on the streets of their Canadian neighbourhoods. More than 50 young Somali Canadian men have been murdered in Ontario and Alberta in the last decade…”

From 2013:
“Over 800 cops carried out massive pre-dawn raids across Toronto and beyond. Ground zero of this quasi-military operation, dubbed “Project Traveller”, was a set of apartment towers on Dixon Road in the Toronto suburb of Etobicoke. Populated in large part by refugees from Somalia, the area is widely known as “Little Mogadishu”…”

Rinkeby riots (February, 2017)

“Rinkeby’s population is 90% first or second-generation immigrant and its name has long become a byword for a “no-go ghetto” among Swedes, though ‘Little Mogadishu’ is a more colorful nickname.

Its police station was shut down three years ago after repeated attacks, and local authorities are in the process of constructing a new Iraq-style fortified, bulletproof structure, though they have reportedly failed to find a contractor brave enough to risk attacks on its staff during building works.”

Dozens of young Muslims have left the streets of the Cedar Riverside section of Minneapolis, referred to by some Minnesotans as “Little Mogadishu” for its high concentration of Somali refugees, to travel abroad and fight for terrorist groups. Some have joined Somalia’s notorious ‘al-Shabab’, which slaughtered 147 Christians at a university in Kenya last month, while others have opted for ‘ISIS’ in Syria. Their goal is the same – to join their brothers in the fight to establish a Shariah-compliant utopia known as a caliphate.”

Columbus, Ohio

“There should never have been a ‘Little Mogadishu’ in Columbus, Ohio. Unfortunately, politicians chose to import Somalia’s Islamic violence to the United States. There are, as a result, ‘Little Mogadishus’ all over America…

The latest Muslim terror attack at OSU is not the first Islamic terror plot to become out of the Somali settlement in Columbus…”

“Frankly, I am sick of stories about cultural conflicts and problems in Lewiston, Maine, the ‘Little Mogadishu’ of the Northeast…”

“After the terrorist organisation ‘al Shabaab’ claimed responsibility for the horrific attack on the ‘Westgate’ shopping mall in Nairobi, Kenya, in September 2013 – which left 67 dead – attention has focused on the neighbourhood of Eastleigh. Also known as “Little Mogadishu”, the Nairobi community is known for being the home to many Somali immigrants in Kenya – and is the nest of ‘al Shabaab’…”
