‘Little Mogadishus’

August 20, 2017

“Each time news breaks of a stabbing or shooting, she and her neighbours clench: Let it not be Somali. They dread what has become all too common, another name added to the long list of men from the community lost to violence.

So many other men I know . . . just murdered.”

“Hibaq Gelle is a second-generation Canadian whose parents fled war-ravaged Somalia in the 1980s for a better life in Canada. They settled in the Toronto suburb of Etobicoke in an area dubbed ‘Little Mogadishu’, arguably the largest community of Somalis outside the African nation

“Gelle is a rare case of success in a community plagued by violence — not only in Toronto, but right across Canada. Many fled civil war in Somalia only to replace warlords with drug lords on the streets of their Canadian neighbourhoods. More than 50 young Somali Canadian men have been murdered in Ontario and Alberta in the last decade…” (more…)

‘Playing The Fool’

July 20, 2017

Here’s a famous musician/songwriter making a complete fool of himself. First, he claims he wrote a song that was too vulgar to release; then, he proceeds to recite the vulgar lyrics. For performers, the need for attention even overrides their inherent intelligence…

“Veteran songwriter Randy Newman revealed in an interview this week that he wrote a song mocking the size of President Donald Trump’s penis.

“I hold that whatever debates may be underway about the targets of Orwell’s dystopian “Nineteen Eighty-Four”, the modern university is the only institution that has taken that noble work for use as a manual.

“For where else are words turned quite upside down, flipped over to stand on their bruised heads and told to dance to the rigorous tunes of fanatics? For it is only on a university campus that simple, basic words are made by violence to take on their exact and opposite meanings: up is down, right is wrong, day is night, and anti-fascism is fascism. ‘Racism is now “genius”?’

December 23, 2016

In a gesture that will forever warp the meaning of the term ‘genius’, an American poet has received a $625,000 MacArthur “genius grant”, and she is going to use it to create the “Racial Imaginary Institute”, where fellow ‘geniuses’ can

“show art, curate dialogues, have readings, and talk about the ways in which the structure of ‘white supremacy’ in American society influences our culture.”

“Claudia Rankine is extremely interested in ‘whiteness’ {‘She is obsessed with skin colour’}, believing that

“it’s important that people begin to understand that ‘whiteness’ is not inevitable, and that white dominance is not inevitable.”

‘Champagne socialism pays off as Sanders buy a third home’

berniehome

“As his campaign for President gathered steam, Sen. Bernie Sanders went on ‘CNBC’ and challenged the business news network’s audience.

“You can’t just continue growth for the sake of growth in a world in which we are struggling with climate change and all kinds of environmental problems. All right?” he said. “You don’t necessarily need a choice of 23 underarm spray deodorants or of 18 different pairs of sneakers when children are hungry in this country. I don’t think the media appreciates the kind of stress that ordinary Americans are working on.”

“What a surprise, then, to learn last week that the Bern and his wife, Jane, have determined that what they need is a third piece of residential real estate. (more…)
